Food is totally political, and when Food Not Bombs serve free food on the street we protest against waste, promote vegetarianism, make visible the problem of hunger in our cities, bring people together in cooking and eating and destroy capitalism just a little bit.
Food Not Bombs is a collection of autonomous groups ‘from San Francisco to St. Petersburg’ and each group creates their own ethos within the general lines of dedication to vegetarianism and non-violence. Even within the group peoples’ reasons for participating will be different, but that doesn’t really matter; food and the lack of it is such a pervasive issue that there is plenty of room for interpretation.
Although food is political, it is also social. Cooking and eating with people is a great way to build friendships and communities, and have fun. Food is an important part of a balanced diet. ~Fran Lebowitz One cannot think well, love well, sleep well, if one has not dined well. ~Virginia Woolf Bristol’s Food not Bombs group welcomes all to help source food (skipped or donations), cook it, serve it and eat it.
